Thousands gathered at New Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over a controversial revision of voter lists.

Led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and backed by the opposition INDIA alliance, protesters accused the Election Commission of removing more than 130 million names from electoral rolls in a process they allege favours Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP.

Opposition leaders described the changes as an attack on democracy. The Election Commission, however, says the exercise was intended to update voter lists by removing the names of deceased, relocated or untraceable voters.

The demonstration marks another escalation in the opposition’s challenge to the Modi government.
