Zimbabwe is targeting March 2027 to settle long-standing arrears with international lenders, as the government seeks short-term bridge financing to clear overdue payments.
Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube says resolving the arrears could help the country regain access to cheaper, longer-term financing from multilateral institutions after more than two decades of limited borrowing.
The scale of the challenge remains significant: Zimbabwe’s total public debt stands at $21.7 billion, including $11.7 billion owed to foreign creditors. Arrears and accumulated penalties account for a further $8.3 billion.
