The Western Cape Education Department advises parents to refrain from requesting their children’s school placements at the start of the school year.

It is urging parents to submit applications for school placement for the 2024 academic year before May 25 this week.

The department also said that receiving late applications made it more difficult to plan ahead and to place candidates.

David Maynier, the provincial MEC, stated that this was done to make sure that no child was left behind.

Parents should apply as soon as possible even if any new applications that are currently being received are regarded as late applications. We can better plan to find positions for all learners if we know in advance how many learners are looking for jobs and where they are located.

In addition, the department has already received almost 21,000 late applications for the upcoming academic year, according to Maynier.

They include more than 2,000 first-graders and more than 11,000 eighth-graders.
