Russia-ukraine Conflict: Concerns Rise About Nuclear Power Plants

Ukraine appealed to Russia on Wednesday for a temporary ceasefire to enable for repairs to a power line to the Chernobyl nuclear power facility, saying that if the energy loss continued, a radiation leak may occur.

Ukraine’s state-owned nuclear energy company Energoatom claimed fighting between Ukrainian and Russian soldiers made it difficult to restore the plant’s high-voltage power line immediately after it was overrun by Russian forces.

Energoatom stated that radioactive substances could be emitted if the plant’s spent nuclear fuel cannot be cooled, and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba stated that the plant’s reserve diesel generators can only run it for 48 hours. According to the UN nuclear inspector, the loss of power has no significant effect on safety.

The IAEA warned on Tuesday that the equipment monitoring nuclear material at Chernobyl’s hazardous waste plants had ceased transmitting data.
