U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains his administration’s “number one goal,” declaring that Tehran must not possess a nuclear weapon “in any way, shape, or form.”
The statement comes as a 60-day U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding expires without a broader agreement. The framework was intended to halt hostilities, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and pave the way for negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme, but talks remain stalled.
The nuclear issue remains at the centre of the dispute, with uncertainty surrounding Iran’s remaining enriched-uranium stockpile, damaged nuclear facilities and the level of access available to international inspectors.
Trump’s latest warning signals that Washington continues to view preventing Iranian nuclear weapons capability as a core security objective, while diplomatic efforts to resolve the wider conflict remain uncertain.
