A United Nations peacekeeper has been killed in southern Lebanon after a projectile struck a UN position, as Israeli air and artillery strikes intensified across the region in one of the deadliest escalations of the ongoing conflict.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) confirmed that the peacekeeper, an Indonesian national, died when an explosion hit a base near the village of Adchit al-Qusayr late Sunday. Another peacekeeper was critically injured in the same incident, and several others were wounded.

UN officials said the origin of the projectile remains unclear and that an investigation is underway. The incident marks the first fatality among UN peacekeepers since the latest war between Israel and the Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah erupted earlier this month.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack, stressing that targeting peacekeepers constitutes a serious violation of international law and may amount to a war crime. He called on all parties to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel operating in the conflict zone.

Intensifying strikes in southern Lebanon

The peacekeeper’s death comes amid a surge in Israeli military operations across southern Lebanon. Fresh airstrikes on Monday hit multiple towns in the south and extended to the southern suburbs of Beirut, sending plumes of smoke over densely populated areas.

According to Lebanese authorities, more than 1,200 people have been killed since the escalation began in early March, including civilians, paramedics and journalists. Over the weekend alone, at least 10 paramedics and three journalists were killed in separate Israeli strikes.

The Israeli military has said its operations are aimed at dismantling Hezbollah infrastructure and neutralizing threats along the border, following rocket and drone attacks launched by the group into northern Israel earlier this month.

A widening regional conflict

The current escalation is part of a broader regional war that has drawn in multiple actors across the Middle East. The conflict intensified after Hezbollah launched attacks in solidarity with Iran, following joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets.

Israeli ground forces have since expanded operations deeper into southern Lebanon, with reports indicating advances toward the Litani River as part of efforts to establish a buffer zone along the border.

The growing violence has raised international alarm, with concerns mounting over civilian casualties, damage to infrastructure, and the increasing risk to humanitarian and peacekeeping missions operating in the area.

Mounting risks for UN peacekeepers

UNIFIL, which has operated in southern Lebanon for decades, has increasingly found itself caught in the crossfire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters. Earlier this month, other peacekeepers were injured when a UN base was struck during hostilities.

The latest fatal incident underscores the deteriorating security environment for international personnel on the ground and highlights the challenges facing efforts to contain the conflict.

Calls for accountability and restraint

Global leaders and international organizations have renewed calls for restraint and accountability as the situation worsens. The United Nations has urged all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law and avoid actions that endanger civilians and neutral forces.

As investigations continue into the peacekeeper’s death, the incident is likely to intensify diplomatic pressure on those involved and further complicate already fragile efforts to de-escalate the conflict.
